Silver Birch of Mishawaka IN. provides an Affordable, Assisted Living environment for seniors of all financial means. The project was developed by Silver Birch Living of Chicago, a leader in affordable senior housing.

The primary project goal was to create a dignified living environment for the residents, and a social service program providing assistance with the tasks of daily living. The architectural brief called for 119 dwelling units - a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments - as well as a host of common amenities and social spaces.

BEHLES+BEHLES designed the three-story building with three distinct wings to minimize resident travel distance to communal spaces, and to create positive outdoor areas for recreational and social activities. The 97,000 SF building presents a residential appearance to blend with the adjacent neighborhood, and to recall the friendly and familiar imagery of home.

Diamond Senior Apartments on White Oak Drive is a new affordable, senior apartment building in Oswego, Illinois. BEHLES+BEHLES was retained to provide complete architecture, engineering and interior design services for the three-story, 60-unit, 59,527 sf building.

 The project mission was to create a dignified home environment for independent, low income seniors. The program called for a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, as well as a host of common amenities and social spaces. The site borders a Park District forest preserve, the focus of views and outdoor recreational spaces.

 The project achieved an exceptionally high sustainable design score from Enterprise Green Communities. The building utilizes a host of sustainable strategies to optimize site potential, conserve water, minimize non-renewable energy consumption, utilize environmentally preferable products, enhance indoor environmental quality, and optimize operational and maintenance practices.

The Wealshire is a long-term care facility dedicated exclusively to the care of individuals afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementia (ARD). The building meets Illinois Department of Public Health licensing requirements for Sheltered, Skilled and Intermediate Care, offering a continuum of care for a resident population of 144. 

The project mission was to create a homelike living environment for ARD residents. The design solution rejects the medical/institutional nursing home model for a de-centralized organization of residential neighborhoods and small group settings.

Eight single-story buildings contain 40 one and two bedroom independent living apartments. A Community Building contains common amenity spaces as well as space for on-site management personnel. Outdoor recreation spaces include both private porches and patios, as well as a community patio, walking paths and gardens.

The North Shore Senior Center (NSSC) retained BEHLES+BEHLES to assist with the consolidation of three satellite Adult Day Care Centers for persons afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease and related Dementia. The new facility, the House of Welcome, provides daytime programs and care for 36 adults. The design solution required the adaptive reuse of an existing, one-story warehouse located on the NSSC campus in Northfield, Illinois.

Victory Centre of Galewood, provides an Assisted Living environment for 102 low-income seniors. The project was developed by Pathway to Living, a leader in affordable senior housing.

 The primary project goal was to create a dignified living environment for the residents, and a social service program providing assistance with the tasks of daily living. The architectural brief called for studio apartments, as well as a host of common amenities and social spaces.

 BEHLES+BEHLES designed the four-story building to fit in with the commercial character of its urban site, while maximizing privacy and positive views for the residential units. The top three floors contain all of the dwelling units in a horseshoe form, surrounding an elevated outdoor garden, one level above the street. The rooftop garden is accessible to all residents for recreational and social activities, reached from the elevator lobby.

 The ground floor is reserved for social and support functions, including an indoor parking garage. The 78,000 SF building presents a familiar ‘courtyard apartment’ appearance to blend with the adjacent single family neighborhood, and to recall the friendly and familiar imagery of home.

The ground floor is reserved for communal spaces, which open to a landscaped garden and terrace.
